Passengers can now use a new and innovative bike rack at Tarneit Station thanks to a collaborative project between the Andrews Labor Government and Monash University.
Member for Tarneit Sarah Connolly today unveiled the ‘Wheelie’, an innovative and quick-to-install bike rack, which is being tested at Tarneit Station for passengers to use.
The Wheelie can hold nine bikes and is simpler to install than fixed bike hoops, making it easier to accommodate the growing demand of people wanting to ride to the station.
The Labor Government commissioned Monash University Industrial Design academic Dr Robbie Napper to design the bike rack, with Bicycle Network, the Public Transport Users Association, local government representatives, Metro and V/Line all giving feedback during the process.
The design of the product has been made available for free under Creative Commons, which means anyone can build them.
The Government will continue to monitor the trial of the Wheelie at Tarneit Station where about 90 people cycle a day, with potential to roll-out at more stations across the network if successful.
Quotes attributable to the Member for Tarneit Sarah Connolly
“The number of people cycling to the station is always growing, and the Wheelie will help us keep pace with that demand.”
“Encouraging more people to cycle reduces the pressure on station car parks and provides people with more options to get around.”
