The first stage of works on Melbourne Airport Rail will kick off next year, with major changes coming to the rail network around Sunshine Station to enable a line to the airport, including the future electrification of the Melton line, the rebuilding of Albion Station and building a Transport Superhub at Sunshine Station. 

The Allan Labor Government has been working closely with Federal Albanese Labor Government to deliver Melbourne Airport Rail and welcomes the additional $2 billion committed by the Federal Government towards transforming Sunshine Station, as part of both Governments’ shared commitment to build and deliver Melbourne Airport Rail. 

This new funding announced by the Federal Government builds on the existing $10 billion that both Governments have jointly committed to the project. 

The State Government will also bring forward their Melbourne Airport Rail funding to enable the works at Sunshine Station. 

The $4 billion joint investment will transform Sunshine Station into a major Transport Superhub, including extra platforms and a dedicated spur line that will make Sunshine Station the hub for regional rail services connecting to Melbourne Airport. 

The funding will also go towards track, bridge and signalling improvements to enable future upgrades to service Melbourne’s north and west, including enabling the future electrification of the Melton Line and providing additional services for the Wyndham Vale Line. 

These upgrades will ensure Sunshine Station can support more than 40 train services per hour, creating capacity for additional services for the growing west and to the airport. 

The Victorian Government will also deliver a new modern Albion Station, featuring an accessible concourse with lifts and stairs. 

Design and planning work is well underway, with works expected to start in early 2026 and be complete in 2030.
