RESPONSE TO WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY ON BETTER BUSES CAMPAIGN

18 December 2024

Since first being elected in 2018, I have strongly advocated for more buses across Wyndham and in my Electorate, first as the Member for Tarneit, and now as the Member for Laverton. I will continue to do so with a focus on improving coverage of the bus network in new and developing estates in my Electorate.

Earlier this year, Wyndham received $61.1 million in GAIC funding for two new bus routes to service our community - including $39.7 for a new route between Tarneit Station and Laverton Station via developing estates in Truganina and the Laverton North industrial precinct, which will provide bus coverage to a major public transport black spot and make it easier for folks in my Electorate to catch a bus to work. The other $21.4 million will fund another bus route connecting Harpley and Cornerstone Estates in Werribee to Wyndham Vale station, again providing bus coverage to another public transport black spot in a developing area. In addition to this, the Allan Labor Government has also invested in setting up school bus routes to connect students to two of our newest high schools – Bemin Secondary College in Truganina and Walcom Ngarrwa Secondary College in Werribee, making it easier for working families to get their kids to and from school.

This builds upon previous investments made by the Allan Labor Government in previous terms, including routes 152 and 182, which I successfully delivered in 2021 to provide bus coverage to new and developing estates in Tarneit West and Truganina, and a number of service improvements on existing routes in 2019, as well as the Tarneit North FlexiRide service which commenced in 2022 and has proven incredibly popular with commuters.

Furthermore, another $150 million worth of GAIC funding has recently been released to help growth councils like Wyndham invest in small-scale community infrastructure, which I’m hopeful will include more bus routes for our growing community.

“My constituents have had the opportunity to join me and the Minister for Public and Active Transport at a Community Bus Forum in June earlier this year, where we discussed the public transport needs of Truganina and Williams Landing in my Electorate. I also run a community bus campaign online, where folks can submit their preferences for new bus routes in the Electorate, which I then use to inform my own advocacy up in Spring Street. This campaign can be found at https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeR5oya36NMRPoSkOHLYnrEqRjlqjNgtNGoAqx9dNB3ZV02Xw/viewform.

As a local Member of Parliament, I also encourage constituents in my Electorate to contact me or my Office for further information or feedback on what they would like to see when it comes to more buses in my Electorate.
