The firefighting capabilities in one of Australias fastest growing municipalities located in Melbournes west has been bolstered with the completion of a new $5.4 million fire station in Tarneit.
The station, located at 417 Derrimut Rd, Tarneit and operational since November 2019, was officially opened by Parliamentary Secretary for Police and Emergency Services Paul Edbrooke and Member for Tarneit Sarah Connolly.
The new station will support the Hoppers Crossing Fire Station, which will continue to operate as a CFA Brigade and includes upgraded facilities to support surrounding areas including Truganina, Werribee and Hoppers Crossing.
The new fire station spans approximately 4,900 square metres, has four engine bays and facilities and bedrooms for up to six career firefighters per shift.
It also includes an administration office, dayroom, kitchen, gym and operational support areas, including breathing apparatus cleaning area, laundry, drying room, workshop and turn-out areas.
Firefighters have access to modern facilities and the latest emergency management equipment, as well as trained personnel and equipment to respond to Emergency Medical Response (EMR) incidents.
This is a significant milestone for Tarneit, as the population is expected to double and reach 64,000 by 2031 as it experiences significant urban development and growth across neighbouring Altona North and Laverton North.
The new facility will initially accommodate four experienced career firefighters who, over the years have assisted in major incidents, including the 2009 Victorian Bushfires, the 2019 Gippsland fires and the Hazelwood mine fire.
Firefighters from the Tarneit Fire Station also supported Strike Teams and Incident Management Teams across Victoria and New South Wales throughout the 2019/20 fire season.
